With
a debut album on 33 Records (33JAZZ213) the Big Colors Big
Band is a dynamic & exciting modern 16-piece Band
comprising current & ex NYJO players & seasoned
professionals. The aim of Big Colors Big Band is
simple-to-entertain audiences with the most exciting big band
material around & with some of the finest soloists &
ensemble players in the south-east, they are building a
reputation for hard-driving, spectacular but accessible
performaces. Big Colors is thoroughly eclectric in its taste
and whether playing music by Pat Metheny, Chic Corea, Bob
Mintzer, Steely Dan or even Frank Zappa - they are committed
to the traditions of the great bands in playing thrilling,
swinging charts! Although the emphasis is on contemporary big
band sounds, they don't forget the roots of the music and
alongside contemporary pieces, love to play charts by
Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and more.
Though all the players in the band are steeped in the
tradition of big band playing, Big Colors Big Band want to
reach beyond the traditional jazz audiences without
sacrificing their commitment to musical quality, they are in
the business of bringing new audiences to big band music
communicating enjoyment whether at an open-air music festival
or a jazz club. Audiences love the mix of swing, latin, funk
and rock that they bring to each gig & feedback from gigs
has been remarkable.
Formed in 2009 by ex NYJO trumpet player David Shiers and
drummer Mark Doffman, Big Colors Big Band features some
stunning musicians and between them, have played with everyone
from Benny Golson, Art Themen, Jacqui Dankworth, Joe Lovano,
John Etheridge, Chris Garrick, Steve Waterman and Orphy
Robinson to Sir Willard White.
